Signs in our urban environment are verbal–graphic messages that identify or direct people towards venues of human activity. Signs play an important role in defining the ‘sense of place’ of a locality, forming an essential part of its cultural identity, making it legible as well as imaginable. Signage as a medium of communication affords a glimpse into a neighbourhood or city’s socio–cultural and economic conditions, its people’s ways of life as well as their aesthetic temperament.

This website is a work in progress. It will be updated with new information as the project progresses. The ultimate goal is to develop an open source academic and research database for the study of urban signage in Hong Kong.
